Break into the New Year with Fasting and Prayer

For the past fifteen or so years, we as a spiritual family have started the year with Twenty-One days of Fasting and Prayer. There are several reasons for this.

  1. Fasting and Prayer is a great way to start a new year because it purposefully and intentionally creates margin in our lives for more focused time with the Lord.
  2. Fasting and Prayer aligns us with the heart and will of our Heavenly Father as we humbly come before him. The agenda for the year begins with a clear focus of His heart and Kingdom.
  3. Fasting and Prayer refines us. As we align our hearts with Him, we allow God to purify and cleanse us.
  4. Fasting and Prayer re-centers us. Important priorities can be lost and/or mismanaged. Extended time with God centers us on what matters most.
  5. Fasting and Prayer changes us. I’ve witnessed this personally and seen it over and over again in people’s lives. When we fast and pray, God changes us so we can know Him better and begin to more effectively impact the world around us.
  6. Fasting and Prayer changes the world. It was Rees Howells, who said, “history belongs to the intercessor.” Those who pray, change the world, and shape history. Prayer is the beginning point for any world changer and history maker.

I would encourage you to fast and pray as we begin the new year and decade. It might be for a few days, a week, twenty-one days, or forty days. Pray and ask the Lord if you should embark on a consecrated time to fast and pray. If so, I believe God will powerfully meet you if you do!

Quick Tips

  1. You fast on something to feast on something. We fast food, entertainment, social media (whatever it is) to feast on more time with God, worship, reading the Bible, and prayer. So fast and feast!
  2. Pursue encountering God and knowing Him more intimately. The goal of a time of fasting and prayer is to encounter and hear from the Lord. Make this your top priority.
  3. Reduce the noise around you. Be intentional about carving out quality time with the Lord as you fast and pray. While I believe that we can pray at any time during our day, I like to set aside early mornings to sit down and be with the Lord. The computer is closed, my iPhone is away, and my Bible is open.

I’ve provided our Fasting and Prayer Worksheet that our congregation is using this year for our 21 days of Fasting and Prayer. Feel free to download this PDF document for your personal use to help clarify a focus and direction for fasting and prayer.

Much favor, grace, and blessing as we head into a new year!

Yes I do have a testimony.Well,my daughter was getting
married and she did not want many at the wedding.I asked her to invite my nephew and she said ‘’No’’.I was very hurt and disappointed. So I went on a fast of 7 days
and prayed that she would invite him.
And on the 8th day she rang me and told me that she has invited Patrick to her wedding.I was so happy and gave Glory to God .

Appreciate the tips and the pdf. I haven’t fasted in quite some time. So this was a great reminder and encouragement to start today. Thank you very much. Love and prayers from Sacramento.

It is so exciting to participate in our corporate fasting this year again. It is a great way to start the year and the new decade. I truly believe it is pleasant in our loving Father’s eyes and He will respond by pouring out so much grace on our life. Thank you for creating this opportunity for the children of God. Last year, a few weeks after our fasting, my mother in law got really sick and on the first night at the hospital, the doctors said we better say our goodbyes to her and call the relatives who might… Read more »
